Experiences with a ketogenic diet

What experiences do our challengers actually have with a ketogenic diet? In this article we have gathered a few personal impressions from our keto Foodpunks.

A ketogenic diet shifts the metabolism so that fatty acids are used above all as the source of energy. You reach the natural state of ketosis. That brings many benefits for the body. Cravings get smaller, concentration improves and fat burning is boosted, among other things. So much for the theory. But what does practice say?

(Everything worth knowing about keto can be found any time in this knowledge article: “Everything about the ketogenic diet“)

Challenger Martina and her experience with a ketogenic diet

Our challenger Martina decided to change her eating for 30 days with the BOOST YOUR BRAIN challenge, our ketogenic nutrition plan. Afterwards she shared her experience with us.

Martina had been fighting excess weight since her teenage years. All kinds of attempts to lose weight failed and left her increasingly frustrated because of the notorious yoyo effect. She decided to change her lifestyle in order to be happy for good.

“Countless diets, from simply eating half to the Hollywood star diet, food combining, Figur Scout and so on, did get me to my goal in the short term and with great deprivation, but they took me back to my starting weight and beyond just as quickly. Frustration and helplessness about my high starting weight of nearly 80 kg (at 1.61 m) led me, in the spring of this year, to think seriously one last time about getting my weight under control for good and in a healthy way.”

In her research she came across LCHF (low carb high fat), which the ketogenic diet belongs to. Because of many positive reviews Martina ordered Marina’s book, which is also how she became aware of Foodpunk. To avoid having to go through the change on her own, Martina decided to get support from Foodpunk and its large community.

“Knowing that you get the support of a whole team and a group on Facebook, I was confident that this would be my last and right path into a new, slimmer future.”

With the BOOST YOUR BRAIN challenge, the ketogenic challenge from Foodpunk, back then still as a PDF, she felt a little uneasy at first, because by Martina’s standards very large amounts of fat were used. On top of that came the “keto flu” in the first week: headaches, listlessness and tiredness. Many newcomers have that experience in the first days when they start eating ketogenically. No wonder. If the body has had to work with lots of carbohydrates and little fat for years, such a drastic turn can feel unfamiliar at first. Some initial complaints are quite possible and completely normal. But once you pass that point and the body learns to draw its energy from healthy fatty acids, it gets really good. That is what happened with Martina.

“In the first week I did not feel so good physically, because like almost everyone I had been caught by the so called keto flu. I was tired, weak and listless and had headaches. But it really only lasted a week. After that I was like a different person. I started doing sport twice a week again and was full of energy.”

Martina saw the 30 day challenge through and, because of her positive experience, wants to keep using the ketogenic diet in future to finally reach her target weight.

“The success simply spoke for itself. Now, after the first thirty days, I can say with pride that I am nearly 7 kg and 6.2 % body fat lighter and richer by many experiences and lovely people.I will definitely keep going until I reach my goal (13 kg to go). After that I will eat freestyle and go by Marina’s cookbooks for good.”

Challenger Nanette and her experience with a ketogenic diet

After years of failed attempts to lose weight, Nanette has finally been able to gather positive experiences with the keto challenge from Foodpunk as well. In her report she writes:

“My goal with the challenge Boost your Brain is to lose weight, and what can I say, it is a full 9.9 kg in 30 days. Working together with my naturopath Ms Nadolny, who recommended Foodpunk to me, I have finally managed it after years and countless attempts. And one thing I know, this is only the beginning. On top of that my sense of my body has improved and the headaches I often had have gone. I have no cravings and no other urges around food. As the coach of a small girls’ football team I also want to show them that you can achieve a lot with little. Anyone who has come across Foodpunk and feels like changing something should try it and gather their own experience.”
